Overview

At Paradigm Medical Management, education is a vital part of the limb salvage process. In our 40-hour course approved by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology, we hope to provide you with not only the history, basic science, background, and indications for hyperbaric medicine, but also with a new focus on wound care and amputation prevention protocols, billing/reimbursement and compliance for the increasing number of hospitals offering hyperbaric services in an outpatient wound care setting.

Upon completion of Introduction to Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Care, physicians, nurses and technicians will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding specific to their discipline through discussion, didactic and/or hands-on participation including:

  • The historical perspective of hyperbaric medicine
  • The physical effects of increased pressure and oxygen on human subjects, devices and physical systems
  • The physiological, pharmacological and biochemical aspects of oxygen under pressure
  • Indications for the use of hyperbaric oxygen including currently approved indications outlined by the UHMS as well as experimental and controversial indications
  • Contraindications to the use of hyperbaric oxygen
  • Assessment and management of the hyperbaric candidate including assessment of tissue oxygenation, wound management, infection control and management of the critically ill patient
  • Oxygen toxicity related to hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  • Prevention and management of hyperbaric emergencies including seizures, barotrauma, pneumothorax, hypoglycemia, and cardiac arrest
  • In-chamber attendant safety including the use of decompression tables
  • Hyperbaric chamber safety including fire safety and safety codes and standards
  • Safe chamber operation practices of monoplace and multiplace chambers including safe compression and decompression procedures
  • Outline the various types of cultural diversities (gender, age, race, religion, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, socio-economics, etc.) that relate to demographics, diagnosis and treatment

Course Credits

The continuing medical education mission of the UHMS is to develop and promote educational activities and other opportunities that improve the scientific knowledge of undersea and hyperbaric environments. The target audience of this effort are physicians and allied health professionals, both nationally and internationally. The activities include undersea medicine; all of the UHMS accepted indications for hyperbaric oxygen treatment; and the physiologic and clinical basis of new mechanisms of action and emerging new uses for hyperbaric oxygen and hyperbaric environments.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and Paradigm Medical Management. The UHMS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physician.

The UHMS designates this educational activity for a maximum of 40 AMA PRA Category I Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing Continuing Education is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 14973, for 40.0 contact hours of nursing instruction.

Cancellation Policy

To register, complete the registration form and mail with the appropriate fee to Paradigm Medical Management or FAX registration to (310) 538-0929. Cancellation must be made in writing and received either by mail or FAX at least two weeks prior to the course date for a refund, less a $50.00 processing fee.

No refunds of conference registration fees will be made if received later than two weeks prior to the course date.
